A professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA, Joel Hans Embiid hails from Cameroon. Thomas Embiid, a military commander, and his wife Christine had Embiid. He had initially intended to pursue a career as a professional basketball player in Europe, but at the age of 15, he switched to basketball and modelled his style after NBA Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon. A fellow yaounde native and NBA star named Luc Mbah a Moute noticed Embiid at a basketball camp. On October 10, 2017, Embiid agreed to a five-year, $148 million contract deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. He also had the option to receive an extra $30 million if he made the All-NBA first, second, or third team or was chosen MVP in the 2017–18 season. The first Philadelphian player chosen as an All-Star starter since Allen Iverson in the 2009–10 campaign and the first Sixers All-Star since Jrue Holiday in 2013 were both announced as starters for the 2018 NBA All-Star Game on January 18.

The only other big man in franchise history with two triple-doubles in the same season was Wilt Chamberlain, who was joined by Embiid in 2019. Embiid and the 76ers agreed to a four-year, $196 million agreement on August 17, 2021.
